Somerset Bat Group

www.somersetbatgroup.org.uk

The Somerset Bat Group is a very active group making an important contribution to the conservation of bats across the county and nationally. The group was founded in 1985 and is affiliated to the Bat Conservation Trust (the national organisation for bat protection) and a part of the Somerset Wildlife Trust.

Members conduct systematic recording and regular monitoring of a large number of roost sites across the county. Raising awareness about bats and aiding their conservation is an important part of the group’s work. Trained and licensed volunteers visit home owners and give advice on bats in relation to conversions or home improvements.

Getting Involved

The Bat Group runs a full programme of events throughout the year, including bat walks, surveys, talks and workshops. Some members also give talks and run guided walks for local groups and institutions.

Members can get involved with numerous surveys and practical conservation work, such as putting up bat boxes and monitoring hibernation sites. There are opportunities to take part in surveys for the National Bat Monitoring Programme as well. Beginners get plenty of support with acquiring the necessary identification and survey skills. There is a small annual membership fee per household.
