Somerset Econet

The Somerset Econet is a computer based mapping system which shows the likely distribution and habitat use of the most important species in Somerset. This system was researched and developed by Somerset County Council in collaboration with SERC.

Econet in action

The information from the system allows planning officers to see what potential impacts are likely on a protected species at the plan-making stage, giving councils the ability to avoid harming protected species.

The information is also used by the county council's Ecology Officer to carry out Strategic Ecological Assessments. These assessments look at the effect of both County Council and District councils' Development plans/documents on species of animals which are protected by European Law (European Protected Species).
