Somerset Invertebrates Group
The focus of the Somerset Invertebrates Group is on invertebrates not covered by other local recording groups, such as spiders, beetles, and hoverflies. The group operates as an informal network, enabling specialists to get in touch with one another and participate in coordinated surveys.
A key aim is to promote the importance of invertebrates and their requirements. The group provides species and habitat information, and advice on habitat management for invertebrate conservation. Assistance with identification is available from the taxon-coordinators who collate and verify records for particular groups of invertebrates. SIG has strong links with national and county invertebrate recording schemes. The group is run independently, but is affiliated to the Somerset Archaeological and Natural History Society.
Getting involved
Regular field meetings take place on Sundays throughout the summer. The group also run training workshops on identification, ecology and sampling methods that are free to all. The group’s newsletter ‘Spineless Wonder’ is published twice a year. Members can also share news and keep in touch via the SIG web-group.
SIG is an umbrella group for anyone with an interest in invertebrates from complete beginners to expert recorders. Recording is often done independently, but members also collaborate to survey particular sites and contribute to joint projects. Members are asked to make a small donation each year and to agree to a code of conduct for invertebrate recording.
