Somerset Mammal Group

www.somerset-mammals.org.uk

The Somerset Mammal Group was set up to promote the study and monitoring of mammals not covered by other local specialist groups. The primary focus of the group is to coordinate systematic recording of various mammal species across the county. This includes helping people participate in national surveys run by the Mammal Society and other organisations. Members have previously carried out coordinated recording of Water Voles and Common Dormouse across the county. The group was founded by well-known local mammalogist Michael Woods and is affiliated to the Mammal Society.

Members get plenty of opportunities to learn various survey techniques and practice their identification skills. The group also acts as a forum for local mammal enthusiasts to stay in touch with one another, and provides a link to some of the country's leading mammal experts. The group actively encourages recording and members can help with identification.

Getting Involved

The group run a programme of winter talks and field outings over the summer. They also run occasional training sessions on identification and survey techniques, such as using Longworth traps. Some members carry out regular checks of dormouse nest boxes near Cheddar. Please get in touch if you would like to get involved.

Dormouse survey

Coordinated dormouse recording takes near Cheddar from April to November each year. New helpers are always welcome and you don’t need a dormouse handling licence to join in, although assistance is available if you’re seeking to obtain one. You can find out more about the project here.

Small Mammal Survey

The Mammal Society's annual National Small Mammal Monitoring Scheme is for anyone interested in conserving small mammal populations. Participants use different techniques to survey sites near to where they live. Each Spring session runs from 1 April to 31 May, and the Autumn session runs from 1 October to 30 November.
