Somerset Ornithological Society
The Somerset Ornithological Society promotes the study and conservation of birds in the county and has links to the British Trust for Ornithology. The society is a focal point for bird recording across Somerset, providing a forum for sharing records and knowledge.
A main activity of the group is the production of its annual report ‘Somerset Birds’, which summarises around 30,000 records sent in by members and other recorders. Guidelines for making and submitting records are available via the society’s website.
Getting Involved
The society operates a full programme of talks and outdoor field meetings throughout the year. Outings usually take place once a month, providing a chance to visit the county’s best birding sites in the company of fellow enthusiasts.
To join contact the membership secretary, giving your name and contact details. For a small annual fee, members receive the bi-annual newsletter Bird Notes, and a copy of Somerset Birds. Access to indoor meetings and walks is free, and non-members are welcome to go along to find out what's on offer.
