Support for Recorders
The majority of our species records come from individuals recording in their spare time, rather than paid professionals. Many are members of Somerset’s specialist recording groups. SERC tries to assist individual recorders and local groups as much as possible, and can provide technical support for the management and sharing of records.
How we can help
Data digitisation and storage
- We provide copies of the recording tool ‘Species Recorder’ - a spreadsheet template that enables quick and easy data entry and management.
- We can provide assistance with the digitisation of paper-based records and data.
- Our electronic database provides a secure long-term storage and back-up solution.
- Your records will be available for a wide range of uses such as distribution mapping projects, developing conservation strategies, research, and the planning process.
Technical support
- We can provide advice on the electronic storage of data and submission to our database.
- Technical support is available to regular data suppliers on the use of specialist recording databases and standard electronic storage systems.
Data exchange
- Recording groups and schemes can set up regular two-way electronic data-updates.
- Data is also accessible to recorders via our non-commercial data enquiries service.
Please get in touch to discuss your requirements.
We welcome all records and these can be submitted to us via the website, by email, by post or over the phone. We prefer to receive large batches of records electronically in formats compatible with our database, see our submitting records page for more details.
