Training Scheme
For 20 years SERC has run a highly successful training scheme in ecological survey and species identification, enabling over 200 volunteers to secure careers in ecology and nature conservation.
The scheme provides participants with the specialist skills and knowledge so valued by ecological consultancies and conservation organisations. These skills are put into practice out in the field carrying out an intensive programme of surveys across the county.
What’s involved?
The training team undertake targeted botanical recording, pond survey and habitat mapping, and surveys for water voles and bats in order to monitor the state of Somerset’s biodiversity.
Training days are held throughout the year focusing on particular species and survey techniques. These are led by members of the local recording groups and other experts.
Trainees are involved at all stages of the project from planning to reporting, including liaising with land owners and data analysis, as well as carrying out the surveys. Before the start of the survey season an intense programme of induction and training is provided to ensure the trainees have the necessary skills they need to carry out this work.
Joining the scheme
Being a trainee at SERC requires a full time commitment for six to twelve months. Trainees are encouraged to remain at SERC until they find paid work in the environmental sector to get the most benefit from the scheme.
A small team starts at the beginning of the year to help prepare for the new survey season while the previous group of trainees are analysing and reporting on the previous year’s survey. The full team is in place at the start of June.
Applications are accepted at any time of year, and we will inform you when vacancies arise. Further details are provided in the application pack, available for download here.
