The Reptile and Amphibian Group for Somerset records and promotes the interests of the county’s snakes, lizards, newts, frogs and toads. The group was inaugurated in 1994 as a specialist group of the Somerset Wildlife Trust and forms part of the national Amphibian and Reptile Group network, ARG-UK.
Recording is the primary focus, and training workshops are held to cover identification and survey techniques. There is also the advisory and education side to the group’s activities. They provide information and assistance to the public in relation to all aspects of reptile and amphibian conservation, including managing ponds and gardens.
Getting Involved
Field and indoor meetings are open to all, and there are also opportunities to get involved with survey projects and practical conservation work. Contact the group if you’re interested in becoming a ‘toads on roads’ volunteer, aiding the migration to breeding ponds in early spring.
The group is an informal association of individuals who share a common interest in recording reptiles and amphibians. There is currently no membership fee, simply register your interest to be kept up to date about the group’s activities.
